Olivia’s eyebrows rose. “A status report.”

She took a deep breath and reached for the receiver. “Mr. Gerber, hi. How are you?”

“Call me Byron, please.” His voice sounded clear and strong through the phone. “I’m calling to find out how my son is doing. He still talks about his angels on a regular basis. I’m worried, Dr. Kelly, because I’m leaving after the first of the year to work in India for a couple months. I wanted Alex squared away before I left, and I would like to hear his progress report directly from you.”

Rachel pursed her lips and took a moment to snag back her calm demeanor. Byron obviously hadn’t cared for Julia’s recent status reports and was no doubt more interested in expressing his opinion than receiving Rachel’s.

“Some children create imaginary friends to play with, and for the most part, those children subconsciously realize their special friends don’t really exist,” Rachel told him. “It isn’t difficult in those cases to help the child bring that knowledge to reality and eventually eliminate the imaginary friend from the daily routine. In cases of emotional trauma, children create imaginary friends to deal with situations their own mind cannot deal with, and these friends are far more difficult for the child to release.

“Alex doesn’t really fit either scenario. I’ve spent a substantial amount of my time with him discussing angels, and he truly believes to the depths of his subconscious he can see and converse with them. Of that, I am quite certain.”

She waited for a response from Byron to determine which tact to take next.

“So what you’re telling me is that we’ve been wasting our time bringing Alex over there twice a week for the last two months. You can’t help him.”

She held her breath for a three-count. “That’s not exactly what I was trying to convey to you, no.”
